Music for learning Irish dance steps

Music is most critical to Irish dancing, as you can hear when Joan Armatrading interviews Seamus Begley:

We recommend the following three CD’s for your Irish dance steps practice, as they are clear and at a pace that is easy to learn:

Blackberry Blossom by Mary MacNamara  Buy Blackberry Blossom here

Music for Irish set dancing

Sets can be danced to any music that is set at the right timing and tempo – reels, jigs, polkas, slides. Apart from Irish traditional music, there is much other music that is similar to or influenced by Irish – Scottish, Cape Breton, bluegrass, rhythm and blues.

However, to make life easy, there are music albums / CD’s that are recorded specifically to dance to particular sets.
Most dance or bands in Ireland have recorded at least one CD, however, many of them are often only available if you are lucky enough to dance to the band performing live!

  • The most comprehensive listing you will find of set dancing music for most sets is listed here
  • There is also a listing on the Set Dancing News website under Library.
